Join us for a week of agricultural education & family fun during the first annual Lee County “Ag Week” 2022. Register for one of the many “Farm Forward” opportunities today!
April 23rd: Farmers’ Market Kickoff and Market Menu | Time
Come join us in downtown Sanford for our Lee County Ag Week kick-off event at the 2022 opening of the Sanford Farmers’ Market! Our market features local seasonal produce, meats, flowers, baked goods, crafts and more. We will also be unveiling our Market Menu series of recipes, which will inspire you to taste local by shopping local. See how to shop from our market vendors to craft a dish that brings out flavors from the farm.
April 25th: Blueberry Production and Care | 4:00-5:30 | Blueberry Hill U-Pick
Meet us at Blueberry Hill U-Pick to learn about producing and caring for blueberry plants! We’ll chat with the Dyson Family about their u-pick blueberry operation and what activities they have planned for this growing season. Then we’ll learn from Extension staff how to care for blueberry plants throughout the season, so you know what to do to care for them at home. There will also be blueberry plants available for you to take home, so don’t miss out!
April 26th: Family Strawberry Jammin’ Night | 4:00-5:30 | White Hill Farms
U-Pick how to have a strawberry jammin’ good time at White Hill Farms. From production, picking, and preserving, there is much to learn! We’ll meet the Jackson family and learn about their farm and what is involved with growing those sweet berries we all crave this time of year. Then we’ll dive into what’s involved in crafting some strawberry-themed treats!
April 27th: Planting for Success | 4:00-5:30 | Watson’s Nursery
It’s spring and time to get out in our gardens, but where to start? Picking the right plant for the right place is essential. Let’s get our hands dirty at Watson’s Nursery, where owner Amanda Jurisich will guide us through how to landscape for success whether you have a large garden space or a few containers! We’ll also learn how to make our own potting mix and to propagate plants so you can “share the green” with your friends and family.
April 28th: Meet a Beekeeper & Plant for Bees | 4:00-5:30 | Extension Outdoor Pavilion
Bees are essential for the diversity of produce grown in Lee County, and honey bees are responsible for the majority of this pollination. Join us for an afternoon full of sticky fun, where we will celebrate and learn all about honey bees! Meet a local beekeeper, learn about what happens in a hive, and how beekeepers care for their hives season long. We’ll also have some “sweet” activities that will give you something to “waggle” about to your friends and family the rest of the week!
Complementing our bee-theme programming, come tour our Pollinator Haven garden created and cared for by our Lee County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers! We’ll also have some seeds and pots available for you to plant your own pollinator-friendly plants to take home and provide for pollinators in your own backyard.
April 28: It’s “Ag Trivia” Night | 7:00-9:00 | Camelback Brewing Company
This evening, team up with your friends and family and join us for some agriculture-themed trivia at Camelback Brewing. Our trivia will include questions from our different program areas (Agriculture, Foods and Nutrition, and 4-H), the different Ag Week events, as well as information about our N.C. Cooperative Extension team. Come thirsty for knowledge and toast with us to local agriculture!
All Week: The “Chick Cam”
To the hatch and beyond! Join us all month as we set, incubate, and hatch a flock of backyard chickens. We will share live and pre-recorded videos of portions of the 21-day project beginning April 5th. During the week of April 25th the camera will go live and you can follow along on our YouTube channel as the chicks “pip” and “hatch”.
April 29: “Chick Flick” Movie Night
What could be better than a spring time movie outside under the stars? How about a movie under the stars all about chickens with great food and fun games and prizes! Bring a chair and blanket and join us at the McSwain Center Outdoor Educational Pavilion for a screening of Disney’s “Chicken Little” where we’ll have games, prizes, food, and maybe even some surprise feathery friends making a guest appearance.
April 30th: Chicks in the City | Time | Sanford Farmers’ Market
Join us at the Sanford Farmers’ Market and meet our 4-H Market Ambassadors. We will also have live demonstrations and materials to help you get started on creating your very own backyard flock. The newly hatched chicks will be making an appearance as well, so you won’t want to miss meeting them.
