Farmers’ Market Opening Day
Spring and warmer weather have finally come to Lee County, and with that comes the opening of the Sanford Farmers’ Market. The Market’s twenty-first season begins Saturday, April 13, 2019 and plans are to stay open until October, depending on the weather and availability of produce. This year the market will be located at the McSwain Extension Education and Agriculture Center, 2420 Tramway Road. Farmers markets are very popular in North Carolina, especially in urban communities. These small, farmer operated markets provide extra income for many small farmers and gardeners while supplying consumers with a bountiful supply of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Farmer’s markets provide an excellent opportunity for you to purchase fresh, locally grown produce from farmers in our area.
The Sanford Farmers’ Market is a true farmer’s market, featuring only locally-grown produce. Farmers live and grow their produce within a fifty mile radius of Sanford. Since the fruit and vegetables are as fresh as possible, nutrition and flavor are at their peak. A tomato picked green and trucked in from out of state can’t compare with one you buy fresh from the local growers. Fresh produce eaten in season can measurably improve your diet and it taste soooo good.
To start this season off, we hope to have a wide selection of vegetables available including cucumbers, vine ripened greenhouse tomatoes, sweet potatoes, baked goods, bedding plants and vegetable transplant. Later in the season you will be able to purchase large quantities for canning and freezing.
