My research investigates how commercial farm management practices influence the behavioral and physiological development of farmed poultry and their ability to acclimate to their housing environment. My research is grounded in a philosophy of comprehensive animal welfare to address three main ethical concerns – biological health and functioning, affective state, and normal behavior. Therefore, I take an interdisciplinary research approach using tools from a variety of fields, including theoretical and applied behavior, physiology, and developmental biology, to address my research questions for animal welfare. My ultimate goal is to identify practical solutions to mitigate farm animal welfare concerns.
