The tree that was here died, so we decided to try a mixture of native perennials instead. The soil was mulched with compost from the City of Sanford (but not tilled!). The plants were never watered after they were installed in October 2022. There are more than 50 unique plant species in this island and our goal is to demonstrate that degraded parking lot islands can support native pollinator species and perennials can be used in a parking lot setting.
The pH of the soil here was 5.2, as of a September 2022 soil test, and it was below the recommended values for all macro and micronutrients for plants.
