Weed Identification – Red Sorrel
Red Sorrel is a weed that is easily recognized by its spade like leaves and small red flowers (Pictured below). It can be found in lawns as well as fields and pastures. It is an indicator weed that is tolerant of acidic soils. If this weed is present a soil sample may be needed to see if the soil is needing lime. Herbicides can be used to control it but this time of year when flowers are present you should not make an application. It is easier to control when the weed is less than 2 inches in height. 2, 4-D and Dicamba are both active ingredients that work for this weed. Be sure to follow the label as it is the law. Also make sure you know what plants are sensitive to 2, 4-D and Dicamba that are present in the area.
