The Evolution of Corn Mazes

With the summer heat slowly leaving us for a cool fall breeze some fall traditions are making their way to Lee County. North Carolinians look for the leaves to change color, the joy of going to the fair and for corn mazes to challenge us as we approach the winter months. Corn Mazes have been around for some time now as they trace their roots back to the 1990’s in Pennsylvania. Through mowing and tilling the soil paths are created in the corn field for people to visit and enjoy. Since the 90’s technology has drastically improved in precision planting and management. With these improvements corn fields have also improved in their designs and complexity. Tractors equipped with GPS help make these mazes more precise as the designs have become more intricate over time. Corn mazes are a great way to connect farmers with the local community. This may be the only time some adults and children ever step on a farm and these corn mazes present a great opportunity to learn about agriculture. Usually these operations offer more than just a fun challenge in a corn maze. These producers offer a variety of goods that are produced locally which also benefit the local economy. Lee County producers are blessed to have the ability to grow a variety of crops. These crops are blooming throughout the growing season and offer a variety of benefits to wildlife. Farmers help tend the land and protect the environment so connecting with local stakeholders is important.

This fall as you travel around Lee County stop by a corn maze and enjoy the weather, but make sure you have plenty of time as some of these mazes may be quite tricky.
