One weed that is a nuisance in a row crop field as well as those with allergies is Ragweed. Ambrosia artemisiifolia is in the Asteraceae family and emerges in the spring. It has lobed leaves and can grow to be 4 to 5 feet tall. One plant can produce up to one billion pollen grains which can trigger allergies. Until writing this article and doing some more research I did not know that it is also a problem in Fraser Fir production. Along with being an allergen, Ragweed has developed resistance to a few different herbicides over the years. This means herbicides that used to be effective treatment options for this weed now no longer provide control. If this weed is proving to be a problem for a homeowner 2,4-D or pulling the weed out provides control. As always when applying a herbicide make sure to read the label and wear the proper PPE that it requires.
