As we have another chilly week here are a few pointers to make sure your backyard flock is staying healthy this winter!
- The first reminder is to make sure you have a heat lamp on to keep your birds warm when the temperature gets below 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
- When using a supplemental heat source make sure you follow the instructions to keep you and your birds safe.
- You may notice your birds holding a foot up to their chest or huddling together when it gets cold outside. When you see this check on their coop to see if it is well insulated or has any cracks. Repair any holes and cracks in the coop to ensure your birds are staying as warm as possible.
- Another way to keep your birds warm is by providing wooden roosts for your birds to rest on. This gets them elevated off the floor and a chance to warm their feet by laying on them.
- My last healthy practice reminder is to make sure you have clean fresh shavings for your birds. Wet shavings create a damp environment that can lead to respiratory illnesses.
A well-kept coop is a good start to keeping a healthy flock.
