What Is Centipede Grass?
(Updated: May 2, 2023, 8:54 a.m.)
Centipede grass is a brighter green color than Tall Fescue and prefers acidic soils. It can be an indicator weed and shows up in overgrazed pastures. Centipede grass should not be used for pasture as it is a slow growing grass. Soil sampling to make sure your pasture is at the correct pH (Bermuda should be about 6.0 pH while Tall Fescue should be between 6.0 and 6.5 pH) and proper grazing management will help keep centipede grass away.
Centipede grass can be used in replacement of other grasses in lawns as it is a low maintenance alternative that prefers acidic soils. Here is a link for Centipede Lawn Management. For more information call North Carolina Cooperative Extension – Lee County Center at 919-775-5624
