The Dairy Calf Project is a 8 week project starting June 10th and concluding with the Johnston County Dairy Show on August 8, 2024 at the Livestock Arena in Smithfield, NC. Each youth will get to show two times during the show (showmanship and type class).
Space is limited to only 12 participants, so please be sure you understand the commitment you are making when you register for this project!
LOCATION:
The Project’s calves will be housed at the Kimrey Farm in Mebane (Kimrey Rd.) for the duration of the project and where all practice sessions will be held. (A big thank you to our host farm!) You must provide transportation to and from each practice for your child.
TIME COMMITMENT:
The Project will meet on Mondays and Thursdays starting June 10th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for 8 weeks to work with their calves. (There will be no workday on the 4th of July). There are six calves for the project with two youth per calf. Any absences must be excused ahead of time (ex. Family vacation, sickness, etc.) or you may be let go from the program after multiple unexcused absences. Each practice will have 30 minutes of classroom learning time and 30 minutes of working with the calves.
EXPECTATIONS:
Youth must attend practices weekly (unless an excused absence), complete a project record book, participate in the dairy show, listen/learn/be safe, treat cattle with respect, and have fun! On the farm, we expect families to respect the owner/property (no littering, no climbing, no exploring, etc.), have a pair of boots for the farm or boots you can disinfect between practices for biosecurity, and be safe (do not touch electric fences, climb on equipment, etc.).
ELIGIBILITY:
Youth between 5 to 18 years old on January 1, 2024 will be eligible to participate.. Youth must be a member of 4-H in Alamance County and must also be enrolled in 4-H Online.
The breakdown of age categories is as follows (we will open 3 spots for each category for registration for this project):
- 5-7 Cloverbud (non-competitive)
- 8-10,
- 11-14
- 15-18
REGISTRATION:
We will be using the 4-H Online System, please have your child already enrolled in 4-H Online prior to the project registration release.
COST:
There will be a $40 registration fee per child payable to Alamance County 4-H (cash or check) AFTER you have a successful registration that is confirmed by Sarah Maddry, 4-H Agent. If you do not pay within two weeks of being confirmed for the project, you will be dropped and someone will be added in from the waitlist for your spot. The entry fee covers project materials and a white polo (for show day) for each youth.
PROJECT RECORD BOOKS:
4-H Project Records are intended to provide participants with documentation of their progress towards a successful conclusion on show day. It is highly recommended that participants and their parents take the time to photograph and keep a diary of the activities and events as they occur. All this effort is geared towards providing youths with a meaningful, enriching experience to help them grow as individuals and gain confidence among peers. Record book preparation will not only help the youths develop excellent record-keeping skills but will serve as an interesting record of the youth’s experiences. Completion of Project Record Books are required. No youth ages 5-18 will be permitted to show without turning in a completed project record book prior to the show (date TBA). Project Record Books will be judged and awarded in each age division.
DRESS
Workdays: For project work days, participants must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes, preferably boots that can be washed/cleaned. There is a high probability that participants’ clothes will get dirty, so dress accordingly. Workdays will be held rain or shine!
Show: The dress code for the show while in the ring will be white polo shirts (provided) and khaki pants. Closed toed shoes, boots preferred.
