School Enrichment Programs Off to a Good Start

This school year, we are offering enrichment programs to our second and third grade students in the county. Second graders will be learning about life cycles and have the choice to study the life cycle of a butterfly or a chicken. Third graders will be learning about the properties of soil. For the fall program, Amanda is working with second graders at Pilot Mountain Elementary and third graders at Shoals Elementary. They are enjoying the hands-on learning activities in the 4-H curriculum. We look forward to working with other schools throughout the school year!

4-H Club News

Beulah Club –

Beulah 4-H Club held their annual Pet Show for the September 12th monthly meeting. Six members entered: 5 pets and 2 toy pets. Ribbons were awarded to pets for Cutest, Smartest, Loudest, Most Unusual, and Best Personality. Rose Harris’ dog Lilly was crowned Queen of the Pet Show, and Willow Hoffman’s toy dog was crowned King of the Pet Show. On September 23, Alyna Rutt and Christy Shelton entered items in the Carolina Classic Fair. They also assisted club leaders in putting up their “Magic in the Fair with 4-H” fair booth at the Carolina Classic Fair. We are looking forward to finding out what ribbons we have won on the booth and individual items. For our October 10th monthly meeting, our program and activities will be about Rocket Science at the Beulah Community Building from 6:00-7:30. All youth ages 5-18 are invited.

Pilot Club –

For our September meeting, we learned about the science of food. We put cream into small containers for each 4-H’er, and they had to move and shake to churn their cream into butter. They then learned about the reaction of rock salt and ice to help ice cream freeze. They each got to make their own ice cream in a bag. Their favorite part of the night was eating the ice cream! Our next meeting will be held at The Farm in Dobson on Tuesday, October 11th from 5:30-8:00 p.m.

4-Hooves Club –

At our September meetings, we learned about the basics that a horse needs to have: food, water, and shelter. Each member made their own diorama to create a habitat for their horse. They had to include shelter for their horse, food, and fresh water. They did a great job with this and were so creative! At our October meeting, the kids will be painting a horse to go in the habitat they created. They will also get to help create costumes for the horses at the farm for their upcoming Halloween Trunk or Treat. Group 1 will meet on October 10th and Group 2 on October 24th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

County Council –

We held our second meeting of our new County Council on Monday, September 18th , from 5:30-7:00 p.m. We started the meeting with a fun way to get the council used to making motions. We made a snack mix, and they had to make motions as to which items they wanted in their snack. Another member then had to second the motion, and a majority vote of the council had to pass for an item to be added. The group seemed pleased with their tasty creation and enjoyed snacking on it during the remainder of our meeting. We discussed interest in forming a Livestock Club to help practice skills in showmanship, judging, quiz bowl, and skill-a-thon. The County Council voted on our fall fundraisers. They decided to sell evergreen wreaths and garland, as well as Dewey’s Bakery items, for the upcoming holiday season. Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 16th , from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at N.C. Cooperative Extension, Surry County Center. We will be organizing our fall fundraisers and discussing how we can continue growing our 4-H program. Any interested youth ages 13-18 are welcome to join us!

Dog Club –

We are excited to have another new club start up this month! This club will focus on dogs and their care. We will be learning about the nutritional needs of dogs, the basic daily care they need, the importance of vaccinations and vet care, grooming and nail care, basic obedience, and learning tricks to do with our dogs. The club plans to begin meeting in October and will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Since we will be working with animals, this club will be limited to 12 participants. Homeschool Club –

Our homeschool clubs met for the first time in September. Our elementary group met on September 7th, and we learned about nutrition using My Plate. We also learned about apples and how they make a healthy snack. The kids were able to taste test some products made from apples, including apple slices, applesauce, apple chips, and apple juice. Our middle and high school clubs met on September 8 th . They learned about nutrition and looked at the amount of salt, sugar, and fat that are in popular foods with teens. We looked at the new Smart Labels that are being used on food packaging and how to use them. We then had an apple nacho bar, and the teens were able to choose their toppings to build their own apple nachos. The elementary club will be meeting on October 5th, and we will focus on the science of pumpkins. The middle & high school groups will meet on October 12th, and we will be looking at the agriculture industry in North Carolina. We will have a joint homeschool club field trip to The Farm in Dobson on October 19th. 4-H Camp –

One of the highlights of the summer for our 4-H’ers is camp! Believe it or not, we are already making preparations for camp for next summer! We have a limited number of spaces for campers, ages 8-14. The deadline to register for camp is October 26th. If you are interested in your child attending camp, or would like more information, please contact Amanda Gann at (336) 401-8025 or agann@ncsu.edu.

Please enroll your child in our programs by creating a 4-H Online account for them. Access 4-H Online. Everyone should enroll in 4-H before attending a 4-H program or club meeting. If you have problems enrolling or re-enrolling your child, please contact Amanda at (336) 401-8025 or agann@ncsu.edu.

4-H Holiday Food Show

Calling all budding chefs! We will be having a Holiday Food Show on Thursday, November 30th , from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. Youth may decorate their table with a holiday theme of their choice. They will bring a dish they have prepared, with minimal help from an adult, to share with the judges. They should also bring a copy of the recipe for their dish. They will be judged on their table decoration, visual appeal of their dish, the taste of their dish, and their presentation to the judges. Each participant will receive a ribbon, and one grand prize winner will receive a basket of cooking tools and utensils! Be on the lookout for a Google Form on our Facebook page where you can sign your child up .If you would like more information, you may contact Amanda at (336) 401-8025 or agann@ncsu.edu.
