Collapse ▲We had a great time at the 2023 West District 4-H Horsemanship Clinic. There were 67 youth riding their horses and 7 unmounted participants. Riders came from Cherokee County to Lincoln and Gaston County. We had great clinicians and great participants.
Participants at the clinic are able to choose their riding discipline and have two days to work with clinicians on those techniques. The disciplines they can participate in are: Cloverbud, Novice, Non-trotting, Speed, Ranch/Western, and Hunt Seat/English. On the third day, the participants get to participate in the cattle sorting, horse obstacles, and/or dressage.
Mounted participants were able to participate in the Golden Shovel stable management award. Participants had to keep their horse stalls picked and maintain their horses food and water access. The equestrians are given points by anonymous judges that do several checks during the first 2 days and the 1st and 2nd place stalls are given the Golden Shovel award.

Cherokee County 4-H Horse Club members that were at the clinic were 4-H Volunteer Leader Erika Hedden and 4-H Members: Faith Ward, Bella Hedden, Kiera Stockton, Kiley Stockton, Carson Allen, Maylee Allen, Rylee Robertson, and Hannah Dockery. We also had several of are neighboring Clay County 4-H youth in attendance.
When you have had the best time with your pony riding friend at the West District 4-H Horsemanship Clinic and then you head home.
