NCSU Plant Toolbox Profile for Packera anonyma
Small’s Ragwort is in the Asteraceae family and is native to the United States. It is a wildflower that blooms in April and can be found on well drained soils. It can have some weed-like tendencies and ragwort is highly toxic for horses and cows. Livestock do not prefer to eat ragwort but may ingest it if other forages are sparse. Spot spraying can be helpful, applying broadleaf herbicides when the weed is shorter than 4 inches should be effective. Take soil samples of your pasture to make sure you have built a conducive environment for beneficial forages to grow. If it is not in a pasture this plant can help pollinators early in the season with its early flowering period.
