Annual Knawel (Scleranthus annuus)
Native to Eurasia, it is a winter annual that can be found on bare row crop ground and in thin grass stands. It is a broadleaf weed that has prostrate growth and forms short clumps. Using a cover crop or having an established stand of grass can help prevent this weed from getting established. Taking soil samples is an important step in providing a solid foundation for desirable grass to grow.
2,4-D and Dicamba both control Annual Knawel. Multiple herbicides are labeled for use in fields, pastures and lawns. These herbicides often contain one or more herbicides in addition to the ones listed above. Usage of these herbicides will also control beneficial clover. Always read the pesticide label as the label is the law. The label will tell you what weather conditions you can treat in to prevent off target plant damage.
