Graziers' Recordkeeping Workshop for the Livestock and Horse Owner
You can't manage what you can't measure. Recordkeeping is a key component to managing an efficient farm business. With proper record keeping, evaluations can be made on the reproductive, productive and financial status of your livestock and horse operations. Then management and selection practices can be implemented to make improvements where necessary. Likewise, the simple act of measuring and recording the forage mass in pasture fields can help with many management decisions graziers must make. Measuring the fields on a regular basis can help producers see trends in forage growth and enable them to adjust their management accordingly. During this workshop, producers will be exposed to techniques for forage measurement, and what can be done with the information to help them improve their operations. After lunch on the 20th, producers will be made aware of the importance of recording information on their farms, specifically cattle farms, what types of records to keep, and some methods and software available for record management. The free workshop will begin with registration at 9:00 a.m. covering Graziers’ recordkeeping in the morning, followed by a sponsored lunch, then a hands-on cattle herd recordkeeping program(s) in the afternoon. Instructors include: Amanda Schaller, State Grazing Lands Specialist with USDA – NRCS; Gary Gregory, Beef Cattle Specialist at NCSU, and Martha Mobley, Agricultural Agent in Franklin County. Participants are asked to bring their own laptops to use throughout the day.
