Rain events in 2024 were scattered but totals came in just above our historic average. In Raleigh at Lake Wheeler Field Labs we accumulated just under 46 inches of rain. The historic average for that location is slightly below 43 inches. The wettest year on record was fairly recent with 2020 having an astonishing 70 inches of rain. On the other end of the spectrum in 2001 we only had 25 inches of rain, leading to the driest year on record since recording began in 1983 at that location. Looking closely at rain events in 2024, we were on pace to be below average until late July. After July we never fell below the historic average mark again. By the end of September we were 8 inches above the historic average and only off of the total accumulated average by 1 inch. At 42 inches on September 30th we were on pace for a very wet year. The faucet turned off in October and November leading to 2 inches of rainfall in those two months combined. With little rainfall in the final three months of the year our rainfall totals are close to what we have historically seen. In 2025 we hope for more timely rain events throughout the year rather than a few heavy rain events.
