Living Well with Family and Consumer Sciences

March is here and are you prepared to start Living Well? The National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences declares the month of March as “Living Well” month. What does that mean?

Living Well month is about expanding the reach of the work of Family and Consumer Science educators, showing pride in our profession and doing what we do well- providing educational services to improve the lives of individuals and families in our community. To live well may encompass many areas such as:

  • Physical Wellness
  • Mental Wellness
  • Environmental Wellness
  • Financial Wellness
  • Intellectual Wellness
  • Occupational Wellness
  • Social Wellness
  • Spiritual Wellness

As Family and Consumer Sciences Agents, we establish programming efforts driven by research-based information that fits the needs of the community. The core of this programming lies within nutrition, health, food safety, food preservation, and local food system. Other areas of education that address the critical issues in our communities may include housing, parenting, family resource management, human development and aging. We serve our communities by being those community champions, encouragers, and advocates in hopes of empowering those with the necessary resources to be strengthened and to live out transformed lives.

What can you do?

You can implement many new habits, tricks, intentions, & schedules to start Living Well. It starts on an individualized basis- knowing your needs, the desires of your heart, and your current habits. Get comfortable in the uncomfortableness of being introspective. Reflect on what you may need to transform in your life that leads to you being strengthened. Be vulnerable with yourself!

Here are a couple of tips for starting to live well this month.

Tips for Living Well this Month:

Adopt new nutrition intentions!

  • Increase fruit and vegetable intake
  • Change your protein- add in beans, nuts, & seeds alongside your lean-meats
  • Choose whole grains- oatmeal, quinoa, & brown rice
  • Limit your sugar intake for the week
  • Take extra time at the store to read the nutrition facts labels!

Find how you enjoy moving your body

  • Find the movement that you like to do! Not what other people choose to do- try walking, running, strength training, yoga, bicycling, hiking, swimming, golf, ultimate frisbee, or dancing! The options are endless on how you can #MoveMore
  • The overall goal should be to just Move More, once you find what you actually enjoy to do and not what you believe you “should do,” this part should come easier.

Setting aside time to recharge!

  • You matter! How you feel matters! And recharging so you can go and care for others again matters! Find what recharges you.
  • Plan out that self-care time that makes you feel recharged and that will benefit your overall well-being. Maybe take a mental health walk break during the work day, read a couple of chapters in a book, start a gratitude journal, have dinner with a friend, try out a new recipe, or declutter a space in your environment.
