Orange County 4-H is pleased to partner with the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber of Commerce and sponsors BB&T (Now Truist) and Durham Technical Community College to offer the 2021-2022 Students Transforming Expectations & Exploring Real Opportunities Program. Applications are DUE by June 21.
What is STEER?
The STEER Program is a free program launched in 2019 to help rising 10th and 11th-grade students in Orange County realize available workforce opportunities in Orange County. This program will meet one day per month August-May to help young people (who are likely to remain in Orange County after high school) develop leadership and career skills. The program aims to build connections that will cultivate futurPeople learning CPRe opportunities for apprenticeships and part-time jobs that may lead to full-time careers. Participants will visit local industries, meet business leaders and entrepreneurs, explore community college and technical training programs, and develop leadership and soft skills they will use in life and in their future careers.
Who Should Apply?
Kids with homemade signsPublic, private, and homeschool students in Orange County who will be entering 10th or 11th grade in the 2021-22 school year.
We are specifically interested in students who may:
  • Not have yet selected an education pathway for after graduation and who are interested in exploring local career options. This program will emphasize technical trades, community college programs, technical degrees, and on-the-job training programs.
  • Anticipate remaining in the Orange County area after graduation from high school
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.25 unweighted (negotiable)
  • Be involved in a Career & Technical Student Organization.
  • Have not yet selected a career cluster.
  • Be from an underserved population with challenges that may be preventing them from succeeding academically.
How Do I Apply?
14 students will be selected to participate. Visit the STEER Program website and click on “Apply KIds outside a restaurant Here” to access the online application. The application will include:
  • Basic Contact Information
  • Extracurricular Experiences (CTSOs, sports, etc.)
  • Volunteer Experiences
  • Part-Time Jobs (both current and past)
  • Why do you think you would be a good fit for this program? Upload a two to three-paragraph statement. In lieu of writing, you may also submit a drawing, video, slide presentation, or audio file to support your application.
  • Please provide names and email addresses for TWO people who can complete a recommendation for you. One must be an academic reference and the other may be a personal reference (coach, clergy, mentor, etc.).
Not a 4-H Member? 
That’s okay. Apply anyway. If you are selected for this program, we will send you additional information on how to enroll in 4-H for FREE this fall.4-H leaders
