The aim of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is what it says it is. It is a guideline to point you in the right direction when it comes to nutrition and food consumption. The guidelines are aimed to promote health and prevent chronic disease. This means that the guidelines are not prescriptive in the sense that they contain clinical guidelines to treat a particular chronic disease. The research has indicated that shifting food and beverage habits can better support the health of just about everyone regardless of their health status. Secondly, the Dietary Guidelines focus on dietary patterns because nutrients and foods are not consumed in isolation but are consumed in combinations. On this basis the key to getting nutrients that your body needs is variety. Lastly, the Dietary Guidelines take a lifespan approach which means that a healthy eating pattern is encouraged for each person’s stage of life.

These are some great focuses for the Dietary Guidelines because this actually allows you to incorporate healthy eating habits according to your lifestyle. This means the Dietary Guidelines are prepared to meet people where they are. The Dietary Guidelines also seeks to go past the bare minimum by mentioning MyPlate as a basic starting place but encourages people to expand their knowledge of healthy eating habits.

Some of the main takeaways from the Dietary Guidelines.

  • The charts used are pretty eye-catching as well as helpful. These charts allow you to see the average intake of the specific age bracket versus the recommended intake for that age bracket.
  • The Guidelines seem to account more for culture and income levels. This Salmon with greens and rice.guideline is outlined on page 27. There is also a link to help folks eat on a budget.
  • The recommendations are broken down by color and type. They give a list of the foods that fit into each of these categories. You can see this on page 145 & 146.
  • Macronutrient and Micronutrient intake recommendations are in pretty smooth charts for each gender according to their life stage including pregnancy and lactation. These can be seen on pages 131 to 141.
