How many times have you taken a vacation and did some work? We do this more times than we think. I surveyed five people and four out of five admitted to working while on vacation or being contacted by a coworker or supervisor, regarding work.

In 2018, a study released by the American Psychological Association found that vacations serve to remove people from various activities and work environments that are associated with stress. It is good to step away from the work environment to take time to renew and invigorate one’s energy for productivity.

In our persistence to get more done in less time, the quality of the work produced can suffer. The stress of quantity over quality can cause one to become inconsistent in performance.

Ernst & Young, a professional services firm, discovered through the implementation of an internal study that for each additional 10 hours of vacation time employees took, their year-end performance ratings improved 8 percent. In planning the work year, plan to pace yourself and include time to wind down and enjoy life.

The Framingham Heart Study, which followed human subjects for several years found that men who didn’t take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks compared to men who did take time off. And women who took a vacation only once every six years or less were almost eight times more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack compared to women who vacationed at least twice a year.

Don’t short change your health, enjoy life and take a vacation.
